Mother Nature has added a little pressure in the Bull Run District this year.
Due to foul weather at the start of the 1989 baseball season many teams saw limited outside practice. Rain continued to plague the district’s line up, forcing what Rappahannock coach Gary Leake calls an “incredible schedule for high school kids to have to play."
With a week now remaining in the regular season, teams must squeeze in five to eight games. “Even the major league has days off!” Coach Leake complained. “It’s a lot to ask high school kids to play four games in five days. But you can’t blame anyone. The season was late starting because of the success of the basketball team. Weather has also hurt us.”
Adding more pressure is the tight race for the district’s top four slots and a berth in the post-season tournament. Rappahannock is tied for fourth with the Clarke County Eagles. The Panthers lost their first game with the Eagles at home by one run in extra innings. They seek to avenge that setback on May 5 in
