Rappahannock County’s Special Olympics team isn’t the largest, but there are none with more spirit.
The five members of the team, who are all students in .the county schools, went to Woodberry Park School in Orange on April 22 to compete in the regional Special Olympics. There they faced athletes from the Special Olympics programs in Culpeper, Madison and Orange counties.
And Rappahannock’s five team members, true to the county’s long history of overcoming lack of depth in athletic events with wide-ranging skills in many areas, competed in several events each. The events entered by the county’s athletes cover the spectrum of track and field events.
Todd Smoot was a contestant in the shot put, softball throw and the 50-meter dash.
Peggy Sue Gallihugh joined her teammate Todd in the 50-meter dash, as well as the softball throw. She also competed in the long jump.
Thomas Brown also entered three events in the competition. He ran in the 100-meter dash, was a contestant in the softball throw and also the long jump.
