RICHMOND - Governor Gerald L. Baliles has proclaimed the week of April 30-May 6 as Severe Storm Awareness Week in Virginia. This designation was made to call attention to the hazards that severe storms cause to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In observance of this week, the Virginia Department of Emergency Services (VDES) will be conducting a public awareness of campaign and a two-day conference on severe storms in Virginia Beach on May 45. The conference is being co-sponsored by VDES. the National Weather Service and the City of Virginia Beach.
Virginia is subject to many types of natural disasters, including tornadoes, floods, hurricanes and thunderstorms. These severe weather patterns can and have killed and injured many Virginians and have caused millions of dollars worth of property damage.
Although we cannot prevent severe storms of natural disasters from occurring, we can learn to cope with these forces of nature through increased knowledge and preparedGypsy
