To the editor:
I was not at the public hearing about the proposed Library/Town Hall swap. However, your headline proclaiming public support for the swap and your lead statement about “near unanimity" are not supported by the article itself {Rappahannock S'cirs April 27).
By your own report, two people didn’t want the library to move at all; two people wanted the Rappahannock Historical Society to get the library building: two, possibly three, people wanted the Golden Key Performance Company to have continued access to the Town Hall; one person wanted to be assured that the town would not limit the use of the library building to town functions only; Mr. Bingham wanted the whole matter re-studied (as usual); and, a lawyer for the Inn at Little Washington presented the Inn's case for buying the library itself.
Only two people are quoted in support of the proposed swap: Colonel Luke objected to the Library falling into private hands and both he and Mr. McCarthy noted the County’s need for more office space and possibly, a second court room. Neither of their comments addressed the merits of the swap itself.
