THE PLAINS — Tens of thousands of horse raeirig fans will descend upon Great Meadow this Saturday, May (3, for the highlight of the steeplechasing season: the 64th Running of the Virginia Gold Cup.
The event has such great appeal Meause it combines horses, the northern Piedmont’s rolling countryside, a chance to see the rich at play and exciting sport for one afternoon t- hopefully in the spring sunshine. * As the size of the event has grown in recent years, the event has taken on a different character than when the race was run on Warrenfan’s Broadview course. This year |hnre than 40,000 persons are expected, and newspapers and magazines from around the world will be Covering it.
Tickets are sold out, according to ticket manager Monte Rust. A car pass admits a total of six persons, so if you want to go but don’t have a ticket, you’ll have to ride with someone who does.
The main focus of attention is, of course, the $80,000 Gold Cup, won last year by Von Czadek, riden by Patrick Worrall. *rThe races aren't the sole attraction, however. Organizers have assembled a variety of entertainment eyents besides the seven-race card -* and tailgaiters, as usual, will bring their own diversions. j Gates open at 10 a.m., and post tjfiie for the first race is 1:30 p.m. There will be two pony races, the first starting at 12:15 p.m. Great Meadow is located between Marshall and Warrenton on U.S. 17. From Interstate 66, take The Plains exit, Rloute 245, south to the course.
