low deer can be pastured on an acre where the same amount of land will support only a single steer.
A deer carcass brings from $4.50 to $5 per pound compared to 70 to 75 cents a pound currently paid for slaughter steers. And in Washington area stores that sell venison imported frozen from New Zealand, it goes for $14 a pound.
There are other plusses on the side of deer farming. An average cow has eight breeding years, a good one 12. But a fallow doe will produce a fawn a year for 15 to 20 years, Mr. Graage says.
And there s the question of labor. "You can make $4,000 an acre from truck farming, but it's so labor intensive that an acre is about all one person can do," Mr. Hankins reported.
