The European sub-species is believed to have died out on the continent during the last ice age and was most probably reintroduced into the ! Mediterranean area between 1350 and 1000 B.C. by the Phoenicians, who used the deer for sacrifices in religious ceremonies.
They were raised by the Romans and, in fact, a 65 A.D. treastise on agriculture describes in detail the best means of feeding and enclosing the deer.
By the 12th century, fallow deer were being kept in parks in England and Denmark. The first major imports to Germany came in 1577 when the King of Denmark sent 30 fallow deer to Landgraf Ludwig IV of Kurhessen.
