Is additional space for books in the library more important than having a multi-purpose meeting room? That was one of the questions debated at last Thursday’s joint meeting of the Library Board and the Friends of the Rappahannock Library.
The meeting was intended to give the public its first look at the plans for the new library The 5,000 square foot building will be constructed on two acres of land donated by Dean Morehouse on Route 211 just outside Washington, across from the county park.
Architect Dwight Mathews, of McClintock and Associates, designed the building in three sections.
At the end closest to Route 683, the county road paralleling Route 211 where the entrance will be located, Mr. Mathews proposes a multi-purpose meeting room. “The idea of a barn generated the shape at this end of the building,” Mr. Mathews said. This room could function separately from the rest of the building, he added.
"The gallery picked up from the shape of the barn i*uns the length of the library,” he said. “This gives us the opportunity to bring light down into the building, not direct light, more defused light,” he explained. As you enter the main library area.
