localities are trying to qualify for the grants. The same number applied last year and the money available was split between two of them. “It’s not state policy to give small amounts to lots of projects.” he added. The state has $500,000 to allocate this year. “Chances are we’ll get half the building cost or nothing. If we’re turned down we’ve lost nothing but time." He said that fundraising locally could proceed during the time the county is waiting to hear about the grant. “If we get it, we’ll be able to start building much sooner,” he added.
Mrs. Sims said the state’s consultant said meeting the Federal guidelines would probably add 10 percent to the overall cost.
“Any time you get into a Federal program there are rules and regulations,” Mr. Fletcher commented. “Once you have received that money, they tell you what to do. They offered me a grant to do part of my house. I couldn’t afford to repair anything according to their specs. ’’
Mr. Mathews replied, “All these things can be looked into before accepting the grant. It should not keep the trustees from applying.”
Dr. Young agreed. “You can drop the application at any time,” he noted.
County art
on display
The Old Town Gallery, located at 98 Alexandria Pike, Suite 500, in Warrenton, will exhibit recent paintings by realist artist Gary A. Genther during May. Mr. Genther, who recently closed a one-man exhibition in Philadelphia, utilized watereolor, egg tempra, and acrylic to capture the rural aspects of Rappahannock County and Pennsylvania, a gallery spokesman said.
There will be an opening reception at the Gallery on Friday, May 12 from 5:30-9 p.m.
