months, usually beginning about the end of April, the blue crabs emerge from their winter hybernation. They will begin feeding and growing. In order to grow, the blue crab must back out of its hard shell. The blue crab will shed as many as 28 times during its three-year lifespan.
Watermen catch blue crabs in crab pots. They can determine how many days it will be before the crab will shed by noticing a color change on one of its swim fins. A white sigm indicates two weeks or less to moult; a pink sign, within a week; and a red sign, less than two days. It is very difficult to distinguish the color changes and only the skilled eyes of the watermen can see all three changes. Crabs will moult every 8-5
