from the sale of the library building towards the construction of a new library. Well, that’s fine for the library but the County would still have to dig into it’s own pockets for the $100,000 to pay for the Town Hall plus whatever additional amounts would be necessary to renovate the building; which amounts it doesn’t know because it doesn’t know exactly to what use the building would be put.
At the same time, the county would have rejected a much more generous offer for the library building, presumably on the grounds the building should be kept in public hands. But the library building and its control would nonetheless end up belonging to the Town of Washington, which constitutes about five percent of the county.
For once, Mr. Bingham is right. The matter should be restudied.
A brief comment in closing: Mayor Morehouse seems a bit too defensive about the financial contributions that the Inn at Little Washington makes to the community. The fact is that the Inn does contribute, frequently and directly with contributions of food or gift certificates to community events, through the employment opportunities it offers, and through the money-spending outsiders it brings into the community.
