and no holds barred on both sides with allegations of lies and sleazy tactics flying everywhere. The irony is that I have met and observed both of the candidates who in everyday life are pretty mild-mannered and civil. Obviously, their media gurus told them the best way to win in a district with no past voting history was to portray their opponent either as a crazed tax and spend liberal or a right wing kook.

On reflection, maybe redistricting helped account for the proliferation of negative campaigning. It certainly muddied the waters. Right up until the last people were assuring me they were going to vote for the re-election of my employer, though because of gerrymandering he wasn’t running. In the Army they say there are always 10 percent who don’t get the word, but in politics the number may be considerably higher.
