Apparently, after leaving his party Wentz got off the trail, which runs through dense stands of trees on the steep upper slopes of the mountain. Disoriented in the thick underbrush, he quickly got lost as darkness fell shortly after 5 p.m.
Wentz told rescuers that he decided to stay put during the night, and got up the next day and began moving, although the inexperienced hiker apparently wandered in circles most of the time.
