Sen. McCarthy was himself a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination earlier this year, a campaign ignored by the networks and most of the major newspapers. In 1976 he ran as an independent candidate for the Presidency in another campaign widely ignored by the media.
“I was glad he ran strong,” Sen. McCarthy said of Perot. “I had concluded it would be best to have Clinton win, and I didn’t want Perot to spoil that, but he raised issues the others didn’t face. It’s important the system be opened up to third and fourth parties. He’s demonstrated the only way to do it is to have somebody spend millions of his own money. The system should be opened up so persons don’t have to have that kind of money, and can organize a third party more effectively than they can now.”
