Wit no opposition, the Washington town council voted at a public hearing last Wednesday, November 10, to grant the Board of Supervisors a special use permit to construct a radio dispatch tower at the rear of the jail. No one spoke either for or against the permit, although representatives from local rescue and fire crews were present. The tower, to be built at the northeast corner of the jail and standing about eighty feet high, will enable Rappahannock to take calls locally and respond with immediate dispatch of police and emergency workers.
The deer season opened with a bang on Monday but judging by the animals turned in at checking stations around the county, it promises to be less than a record year for local hunters. “Rappahannock didn’t have anywhere near as many deer checked on opening day as in years past,” said County game warden Jim Bankston. “The economy has had an impact on hunting pressures. People are are working if they have work instead of taking opening day off to hunt.” He predicted, however, that hunting pressures and the deer harvest will pick up this weekend.
