Saturday and Sunday nights and a light snow dusted the craggy ridges. He was wearing only light clothing — a jacket over his hooded sweatshirt and a pair of jeans.
Wentz told his rescuers that he had eaten the two candy bars he carried and drank two sodas. He said he slept under rock overhangs at night, covering himself with a layer of loose leaves for warmth.
At one point, he said, he waved at a helicopter that flew overhead, but the search crew apparently didn’t see him through the dense forest cover.
According to Shenandoah National Park spokesman Sandy Reeves, Wentz apparently got separated from the other three children and five adults in his hiking party, a group from Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, shortly after they left the 3,268-foot summit of Old Rag about 3 p.m. Sunday.
The boy was last seen, according to reports, by a group of hikers who saw him running down the Summit Trail. Members of his party said he ran ahead of the others in a race to the parking lot at the base of the Weakley Hollow fire road, which runs down the northwest side of the mountain.
