The company also contends that the four former Food Lion workers were union sympathizers out to hurt the store for blocking unionizing efforts.
United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) has tried for years to organize the company’s 60,000 workers in 13 states. Those efforts have been rebuffed by the workers themselves, according to the company.
Warrenton store manager Rouker said union people passed out leaflets at his store’s parking lot the night before the program aired. He said similar leaflets were distributed at a Food Lion in Fredericksburg the day of the broadcast.
“I think it’s definitely union motivated,” he said.
Rouker said there was no way he would force or allow any of the 75 full and part-time employees to do any of the things alleged in the “Prime Time Live” program.
