The central theme binding the play together is the brotherly comradeship between two distinctly different down and outers - Lennie and George. Lennie, huge, strong, the archetype of childish innocence searches for his version of pie in the sky, a couple of acres, a little house and some rabbits he can tend.
George, his imaginative partner, the brains of the pair, is a drifter and a dreamer. The total interdependence of Lennie and George, innocent and trusting, is both their principle strength and their fatal weakness.
