Gugene McCarthy, Rappahannock’s resident political sage, was not surprised when George Bush carried the county in the election.
He had spent a chunk of last Tuesday morning in his favorite country store and observed that only one of those coming in seemed inclined to vote for Bill Clinton, and the others gave him a hard time. < “You got a car?” one asked. I “Yes,” was the answer. I “You got a TV?” another asked. « “Yes.” < .'“You got a VCR?” ! .'“Yes,” again. ! “You’re doing pretty good. Why Jure you going to vote for Clinton?” he was asked. ; “Because I got all that stuff uniter Carter,” was the answer. ; The former Minnesota Senator relfched that story, and he was also pleased with the election result.
