Margarita Cortez from Chile is living with Kent and Nancy Reeve in Gid Brown Hollow. She said she was told that Americans are cold and it would be difficult to make friends. She said she has found Americans warm, friendly and curious to know about her country. She has found that they are confused about Chile, however. They think it is part of Mexico and that all the food is flavored with chili powder.
She said she thinks it is good that American students have jobs. “Students here learn independence/’ she said. “They have their own money.” She also said she finds religion more important in American families. “That’s something strong,” she said. “It is good to give values.”
Margarita also plans to play volleyball in the winter.
Nina Blicher from Denmark is living with Dick and Jeanie McNear in Gid Brown Hollow. She enjoys riding with the Old Dominion Hunt with Mrs. McNear. She tried basketball in the fall but gave it up because it took time from riding.
She said she was surprised that America is so much like Denmark and she is amazed that her American family is so much like her Danish one. “It’s in little things,” she said. “My Dad here is exactly like my Dad at home."
