As “Third Child,” unfolds, we become well acquainted with the Simmons family who is living in Latin America so that Bruce Simmons can further his diplomatic career. They discover a young girl, Gatita, rummaging through their garbage can for food. From the moment they let her into their house to the moment they adopt her into their lives, each of them is on a path of self-discovery.
Most prominent in the play is the mother, Joan, and her struggles. She finds herself in a place where she would like to take everyone she sees as “less fortunate” into her life, and she uses all that energy and all those good intentions on Gatita.
Determining whether the crew of a live production is superior happens in reverse: if you don’t notice anything going awry, you know that the people behind the curtain have done well. This was definitely the case here.
