If you want to make chin a little “healthier” (i.e. lower in fat and sodium), use extra lean ground beef or ground turkey in place of red meat. Since chili is traditionally high in sodium, cut down or omit the salt and use no-salt-added canned products like canned tomatoes, tomato paste, or tomato juice. Canned beans can be rinsed under cold water to lessen the sodium, or cook your own beans from scratch, omitting the salt.

Beans add complex carbohydrates, fiber, and nutrients to chili, as well as being more economical since less meat is required.

If you garnish your chili with grated cheese, use one of the low-fat or imitation cheeses to reduce the amount of fat or garnish with vegetables like chopped onion, tomato, and shredded lettuce.
