Recently one of your readers wrote asking for fairness and
some semblance of balance when reporting on political matters in and around the county. His message does not appear to be getting through.
When Senator Robb attended a function in Flint Hill on Aug. 11, it was reported as: "A standing room only luncheon crowd of Rappahannock citizens." The "news" accounts both before and after this event read as if they were written by the Senator's campaign manager.
When his opponent, Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen, appeared at a similar event at the Bleu Rock Inn two days earlier, it was noted as: "Approximately 90 people attended the one hour meeting." There was no text, no coverage of his speech, no mention of the candidate's record when he was governor, and no mention of his views and how they differ from his opponent. The buffet breakfast in honor of former Governor George Allen was sold out well in advance and when he spoke that morning, many stood because all the available seats were full.
This was a missed opportunity to give both candidates equal coverage of their views to assist the electorate in making an informed decision in November.
