Wakefield Country Day School (WCDS) in Huntly, will be hosting a regional Battle of the Books this coming school yean The competition will be for sixth through eighth graders at public and private schools in Rappahannock, Fauquier and Warren Counties. (Talented fifth graders at schools with fifth grades will also be welcome to compete.)
The following schools have been contacted about fielding a Battle of the Books team: Cedar Lee Middle School, Highland, Marshall Middle School, Randolph Macon Academy, Rappahannock Elementary School, Rappahannock High School, St. John's in Warrenton, ■Taylor Middle School, Wakefield, Warren County Middle School and Warrenton Middle School.
A team of home-schooled students may also be included in the competition.
Student teams will be asked questions about 19 selected books. The book list is available at each county's main library.
Each school team will have five members and up to two alternates, The actual "battle" will be held some time in May 2001.
WCDS held an intramural Battle of the Books this past year and was fortunate to get tremendous support from various businesses in providing prizes for the competition. (The winning team received $100, savings bonds from Chevy Chase Bank.) It is hoped that this support will continue this year.
