ance costs for those employees who pay for additional insurance for family members (this year the family plan will cost an employee an addition $698), Dr. Gangel suggested that the board consider creating a "cafeteria plan" from the insurance increase savings and the possible Carver Center subsidy that would provide each employee with $500 to be used to pay for insurance increases or for an annuity. He asked that the board reach consensus on permitting him to further investigate the possibility.
School board member Franklin Warner suggested that, especially in light of significant and unanticipated expenditures this year, any savings be "squirreled away." Board member Aileen Johnson, on the other hand, said that the savings and Carver subsidy should be used to reduce the employees' additional costs of insurance "because they can't afford it." After further discussion, the board reached consensus and agreed to permit the superintendent to look further into a "cafeteria plan" for employees.
Maintenance program successes
The school board was provided with a updated "Summer Maintenance Schedule for 2000-2001" that indicated that most of the school maintenance tasks had been completed. Of those maintenance tasks not cancelled or postponed, fewer than twenty-five percent remain incomplete. School Board Chair Rosa Crocker praised the efforts of Maintenance Coordinator Bill Deal, Custodian Shelby Atkins, and the Superintendent in getting the facilities ready for school, and Franklin Warner suggested that certificates of appreciation be provided to Mr. Deal and Mr. Atkins as a means of conveying the board's appreciation.
