This letter responds to Mr.
Smet’s suggestion last week that the sample for the Amissville survey was too small; that the 75 percent who didn't respond would have expressed no opinion or an opinion different from the 25 percent who did. There is little basis for that belief.
The Amissville survey was taken from five populations, all of which agreed substantially with each other; residents who were called at random on the telephone answered the questions in the same way as residents who answered mailed surveys or attended meetings.
Statisticians and pollsters tell us that people who don't vote generally reflect the views of those who do; we can believe that Amissville residents who didn't respond
