For now, a younger workforce is chilling out in area dot-coms and tech firms.
Mook, who is not old enough to gamble, works in a management position at Efront.com. But he says the older workers still respect him.
East vs. West
The power of the Internet, Koelemay says, is that it places the means of production in the hands of the people.
If what he says is true, then Northern Virginia is one of the most empowered regions in the world.
The area is considered by many to be “the Silicon Valley of the East,” but Koelemay says it has surpassed its California rival.
Whereas California’s technology haven specializes in hardware and computer chips, Northern Virginia’s specializes in services. And as fast-paced as Mook says it is, the Dulles Corridor shows no signs of slowing down.
At the Morino Institute, MacPherson heads Netpreneur.org, a business venture group that raises capital for Internet start-up companies.
Efforts like these are putting Northern Virginia at the forefront of the new economy. The communications revolution grows in Washington D.C.’s back yard.
“We’re no longer watching the leaders,” Koelemay says. “Now it’s happening here.”
