Members of the community have found Montpelier to be a special place. In the past, the community celebrated the Bicentennial pageant there in 1976. For years, members of the Rappahannock Hunt held their spectacular opening meets there visited by dignitaries, with the blessing of the hounds and riders in formal dress.
The mansion is presently on the market for $4 million. At the time of the vandalism last May, it was not occupied. While nothing appeared to have been stolen, an estimated $200,000 worth of damage was done.
The community was so outraged by the vandalism that pledges amounting to $33,300 were made to a reward fund for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the vandalism. The Virginia State Police and Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office are working on the case.
