The RCHS sports teams are all in full swing with the first week of school behind them. After a rocky, pre-season start that saw the Junior Varsity and Varsity Girls' Basketball teams lose to Eastern Mennonite and Page County High Schools, they pulled together to play Luray.
The girls' varsity played a good game but suffered a hard fought loss to the Lady Bulldogs at Luray. RCHS freshman guard, Brittany Thornhill, led the Lady Panthers with 12 points in the 59-44 loss.
The girls' varsity is starting to put all the pieces together and the new coach, Mike Dayton assisted by Stefanie Shaw, hopes to have the team ready for the district home opener against Brentsville on Sept. 19.
With Amber Welch, the only returning senior, the varsity is bolstered by last year's junior varsity leaders, Amanda Weakley, Kelly Atkins, Amy Clinedinst, Jessica Nawrocki, and Adrianne Moore. Two surprise newcomers that offer great potential are senior, Ashley Dunn, and junior, Gwen Johnson. Other varsity players that will contribute to this year's success will be junior Betsy Welk along with sophomore, April Parker.
The Junior Varsity team has a rough year ahead with very little in the way of experience and lots of young players.
