who has known the Trotts for 30 years, first met the couple at the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies, a nature camp founded by the Trotts. (The school for young people who hail from all over the world still operates eight months of the year.)
"John was able to share a sense of wonder for the natural world and instill a conservation ethic in his students," said Erwin, who now works at the Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.
"He was a phenomenal teacher," said Erwin. "He was never afraid to say, 'I don't know. Let's look it up.' He was always finding something new to learn about.
"John would have me on the phone, asking me 20 questions about insects," Erwin laughed, remembering Trott's constant quest for knowledge.
