Cell towers ‘a comin - Federal

Legislation removes options.

Don't kill the messenger. The Sprint/PCS application

for seven unsightly cell towers in this heretofore

unblemished County is on its way into our review process. The Planning Commission will hear the application soon—probably in October—and the Board of Supervisors will hear it a month or two thereafter.

The Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996, though it may be unconstitutional, severely limits local control of cell towers, and Rappahannock's Telecommunications Ordinance was crafted to provide County officials with as much control of the process as appears to be possible.

Cell towers will come, and they’ll be here soon. We can only hope that site selection by Sprint leads to as little ascetic impact as possible, and that the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors can be effective in killing those proposed locations that unreasonably offend our sensibilities.

Remember though, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is a Federal imposition, and we must support our guys in their efforts to minimize the impact of this Act upon us.
