Mr. onepard suggested that the Town Council enact an ordinance requiring septic tank pumping at least once in five years. This would also provide, he said, baseline information from the pumping companies on the locations of the tanks and drain fields, and on the condition of septic system components, and would serve as a point of departure from which to develop options for the solution of the Town's septic system problems.

There was additional discussion on the difficulty imposed by small lot sizes in the Town on establishing new drain fields in the event of the failure of existing fields, and Ms. Carter noted that the proliferation of unused wells exacerbates the problem because of setback requirements, and suggested that these wells be identified and formally abandoned (by filling in).

It appears as though the council will follow-up by implementing some of the recommendations made by Ms. Carter and Mr. Shepard, and "Wastewater System" is included on the agenda for the Town Council meeting of Sept. 13.
