“I tell people, “you are entering a different culture; be prepared for a culture shock,” Reese said.
As someone whose own career has included stints in the corporate world, academia and even time as a lumberjack, Reese has watched stone masons, framing carpenters, and waitresses make the transformation to a computer-based career.
One of Reese’s success stories involves “an older lady who hated computers all her life.”
“By the end of the class,” he said, “she was surfing the net and using Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare spread sheets for her church and putting together databases. And loved it.”
Michelle Speirs of newly opened Old Dominion University’s Northern Virginia Center said the university also embraces career switchers. Speirs said that the state of the art tele-learning center, which connects students to courses on the university’s main campus in Norfolk, is geared to adult leamers.And there is no ‘cookie-cutter’ approach.
If a person were to walk through the door having had 18 years in farming, for example, and looking toward possibilities in high tech, Speirs said the first thing advisers would do is to “help that person identify a vision.”
