"The Captive
Spirit" on display
The Captive Spirit, a one person exhibition featuring the work of Rebecca Humphrey is currently on display at The Middle Street Gallery in Washington. A nationally recognized artist, her work employs a variety of media and is based in paper. In her paper making process, cotton is ground with water into a pulp. It is pigmented and placed over relief forms. After the cast paper is dry, the bas-relief objects are removed leaving fossil-like impressions. The juxtaposition of paper, opaque paint, and watercolor heightens the tonality and tactile qualities of this body of work. Watercolors appear through opening in the paper. Allowing the captive spirit to emerge is a motive in both the materiality and the content of these works. The exhibition runs from now through Oct. 1.
