The greatest, common concern of the people of Rappahannock is resisting the pressures of growth and development, according to the Rappahannock. \ Rapidan Regional Commission’s report. One of the concerns highlighted was VDOT improvement projects to straighten our rural roads.
While residents welcome improvements that promote safety, it is important to consider the fact that winding and meandering roads by rivers, farmlands and orchards tend to keep traffic speeds down. This slower pace, especially in our hollows and back roads, brings soothing comfort to both locals and tourists who come to Rappahannock to relax.
If we are banking on tourism as a viable economic base, maintaining the rural character of our roads is critical. They are the pathways to what follows.
