and he would win the match. That was the longest minute this writer has ever experienced.
Each time Rob attempted to escape, Conner was ready with a counter. As time expired, Conner was elated as he realized that he had achieved his goal of reaching the Nationals. He jumped in the air and pumped his fists. Everyone from the Culpeper Cobras team celebrated, as Conner was the only wrestler of the eight wrestling in Salisbury to advance to the National Tournament.
After realizing his goal of qualifying for the National Tournament, Conner was determined to beat his last opponent to secure third place. He faced off with Ameer Wright from the tough Southern Maryland Wrestling team. Ameer had previously beaten Rob Jillar in the Quarter Finals.
The match did not start right away, and Conner’s confident air may have had an effect on Ameer. At the opening whistle, Conner shot and scored a quick take down for the 2-0 lead. In his attempt to escape, Ameer tried a long sit out, Conner quickly hit a snap-back for a 4-0 lead. Once Conner had Ameer on his back, he immediately covered his opponent for the pin. His Culpeper team mates danced in jubilation as Conner celebrated on the mat.
Conner said “I really appreciate all the work my coaches (Roy Haun, Eric Brown, Mike Routt, and Rick Fox) have put in with our team this season. Without their help I could not have done this. I also want to thank Cody Haun for coming to practice this past week as my workout partner, as I prepare for Nationals.”
Conner has another tough week of workouts left before traveling to the 2001 Eastern National Wrestling Championships on April 21 and 22. Conner is one of 1,400 boys to qualify for Nationals out of the 11,000 who began over three weeks ago at the 31 District tournaments. Go Conner!
