One of the many treasures
of Washington, DC is the national zoological park, a part of the Smithsonian Institution. Some readers may be aware, that just to the north of us at Front Royal is an adjunct of the NZP, a 300 acre preserve called the Conservation Research Center, where scientists from the US and other countries, work on, among other projects, saving endangered species, developing new veterinary procedures and reproductive techniques for wild animals, and the operation of a migratory bird center.
The scientific accomplishments of the center are legendary and world famous. Just a brief list of some of the animals saved from extinction by the CRC would include the golden lion tamarin monkey, Guam rail, Toque macaque, Bengal tiger, Przewalski’s horse, black footed ferret, Arabian oryx, tree kangaroo, desert tortoise, Bali mynah and ibexes.
Conservationists in many countries have received their training at this world class facility in The Old Dominion.
