Mr. Smoot was born on Feb. 20, 1911 in Washington, a son of the late George T. and Etta Bea French Smoot. He married Cordia Ann Updike on Dec. 30, 1968.
Mr. Smoot was a retired farm manager and managed several farms in the Rappahannock County area. He was a member of the Washington Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, William Russell Smoot of South Carolina, Bunny Shelton Smoot of Maryland, Raymond L. Smoot of Sperryville and Johnny L. Smoot of Edinburg; five daughters, Mary Edna Dennis of Castleton, Minnie Mildred Riley of Winchester, Peggy Marie Parmley of Louisiana, Donna Sue Smoot of Washington and Jo Ann Kendall of Front Royal.
Also surviving are four brothers, Claybert Smoot and Billy Smoot, both of Washington, Arthur Smoot ol Flint Hill and Bernard Smoot of Mississippi; a sister, Annie Foster oi Warrenton; 38 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and a number of great-great grandchildren.
He was predeceased bj five sons.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday April 19 at Washington Baptist Church officiated b> Rev. Phillip Bailey Interment will follow in the Washington Masonic Cemetery.
Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home in Front Royal was in charge of the arrangements.
