Volunteers always seem to exhibit “the sense of a goose”. They are there to lend a helping hand whenever needed, and we all benefit from the uplifting influence of their positive presence.

A friend and avid Rappahannock volunteer, Hal Hunter, recently referred me to a book, Bowling Alone, about the importance of community and the importance of being involved. The book points out some of the many reasons for volunteering in your community including a more positive attitude, a brighter outlook, and a longer life!

That’s right, a longer life! Volunteering gives your life purpose. It gives you a reason to get up in the morning. It gives you an opportunity to meet new friends. It takes the focus off of your problems and redirects it toward others. I invite you all to look for this book in your public library and then rush right out and volunteer! It is a healthy thing to do.

If you volunteer, please look for signs of our extreme gratitude as you ride through the county or visit our schools during this special week. And feel appreciated! You deserve it! We would like to take this time to invite all volunteers that have assisted the public schools to the RCPS Band Concert on Sunday afternoon, June 10 at 3 p.m. for a special presentation. You are sure to be entertained and it will give us the perfect opportunity to acknowledge your “gifts” in a different arena. Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend.

Thank you all!
