For the first time in its long history, the Rappahannock Hunt has elected a woman to serve in the key role of Master of Foxhounds.
Janet Payne O’Keefe, a 32 year veteran of the hunt, was elected at the Rappahannock Hunt’s annual meeting on April 6 to serve with Oliver L. Brown as Joint Master. She will co-direct the activities of the organization, which is celebrating its 75th year of fox hunting in Rappahannock, Culpeper and Madison counties.
Brown served as the hunt’s Master for the past two seasons and was re-elected as Master during the meeting. Between the two, they have 77 years of riding with the Rappahannock Hunt and both are still under the age of 50.
O’Keefe is the daughter of Lee and Cede Payne of Woodville and Edna Johnson Payne of Culpeper.
