Rapid vine growth

When gourd vines start to grow, daily growth is rampant. If uncontrolled, the vines will grow over almost anything within reach and will grow mostly as one main vine with one or two short side branches. The female (fruit bearing) flowers come only on lateral branches, while the male (pollen producing) flowers come on the main part of the vine.

To produce the most gourds it is desirable to have as much of the vine as possible in lateral branches and not as much of the vine in main stalk, which produces only leaves and male flowers.

This is achieved through proper pruning.
