April 22-28 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and we are using this opportunity to show our extreme gratitude to all of the generous folks in opr community that have made contributions to our public schools over the past year.
Volunteerism does not only mean tutoring or working in a classroom. It can also mean fund raising for a special event, serving on Headwaters - the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation, stuffing envelopes for the Curriculum Enrichment Program, decorating for Science Fairs, chaperoning Field Trips, preparing fields or announcing at athletic events, mentoring a child, chairing PTO committees, preparing food for teacher dinners, donating books for book exchanges, providing housing for guests of the school system, serving on the Senior Banquet committee, offering technical support in our computer labs, donating auction items to school groups or buying yearbook ads, donating your gently used and functioning PC’s, doing research to support a specific project.
The following story is a favorite of mine, and one that continues to inspire the volunteer in me. I found it in my old well-worn copy of Chicken Soup for the Soul. I hope that you will enjoy it, as I do.
