Conner Miller’s three year goal of qualifying for the Eastern National Wrestling Championship was achieved two weeks ago at the Southern Regional Wrestling Tournament in Salisbury, Md.
This was the third year in a row that Conner has reached the Regional Tournament. Each of the two previous years had ended in disappointment. This year was different story for the nine year old county resident.
Conner did make it to Nationals last year, but only as a guest of Roy Haun (his coach) and Cody Haun on their trip to the Eastern Nationals last year. Conner’s teammate, Cody had qualified to wrestle at Nationals and went on to finish eighth.
Watching Cody wrestle at Nationals lit a fire in Conner and he was determined to qualify this year for himself. He worked out nearly every day when he did not have wrestling practice, doing hundreds of push-ups, sit-ups, and running.
He soon began to see that all his hard work was paying dividends. He wrestled like a demon in practice and in tournaments. His - record of 35 wins and seven losses, compiled against older boys in the Northern Virginia Wrestling League was a tremendous feat. Six of his losses came early in the season, against older and heavier boys. His only loss in the second half of the season occurred in a tournament in York, Pa.
Conner sailed through his eight man division at the District . Wrestling Tournament with a perfect record. The District Tournament drew boys from North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. He entered the Southern Regional Wrestling Tournament as one of seven top seeded wrestlers in his 14 man bracket.
