Many readers will also have noted in the April 5 Metro section of the Washington Post, an account of the planned closing of this facility, presumably for good, at the end of this year. The reason given by the Secretary of the Smithsonian, Lawrence Small is to reallocate the money saved from the closure of the CRC to the vague category of “public services”; his budget proposed for the SI has a large amount of money in a “discretionary fund” which is where I assume a good part of the CRC funds ended up.
There was no budget cutback for the SI, in fact in Bush’s preliminary budget, The SI received a nine percent increase over their funds of last year. Further confusing the picture are statements by the SI undersecretary for science, Dr. Dennis O’Connor who, in the Post article, has indicated a desire to achieve international preeminence for SI research and the areas he clearly favors are the physical sciences.
