Proper pruning
Pruning gourd plants correctly will cause the plant to grow lateral branches that produce the gourd bearing female blooms. Let the gourd vine grow natural for a distance of eight to ten feet, then cut two inches from the end of the vine with scissors. This will cause the vine to produce lateral branches, as soon as the branches have grown four leaves the ends need to be cut from them. Cutting the lateral branches will then produce vines called, sub-laterals. Allow the sublateral branches to grow as long as possible. This method produces the most female flowers, which produce the gourds. Also prune any leaves that are shading a developing gourd and prune to allow the whole plant to be sunny and airy. Well-managed, pruned plants have been known to produce as many as 100 gourds.
