Fred Astaire didn’t need it. Michael Jordan probably doesn’t either. But Karen Loving believes that everybody else needs The Alexander Technique.

Loving, of Culpeper, remembers the first time she saw a practitioner of the Alexander Technique, when she was a massage therapy student in Charlottesville.

“I noticed these wonderfully poised and graceful people,” she said. She knew immediately what she wanted to study.

The Alexander Technique, which Loving has studied since 1985, guides the body to move and carry itself with a minimum of stress and tension. The Technique, developed in the 1800s by F.M. Alexander, seeks to return bodies to the natural, healthy grace people had as children, and then lost.

Trainers in AT must complete a three-year course of study before certification. Teachers study an individual’s habits of movement and posture. The student is then guided in new approaches to releasing tension and relearning how to sit, stand and walk
