Volunteerism

The month of April is National

Volunteer Month and residents of the

county deserve special recognition

In the editorial platform of the Rappahannock News

we use several bedrock issues to be of special

importance to the character and heritage of Rappahannock County and one of these statements read:

Volunteerism, a hallmark of those who live in this proud and independent community, will be supported and encouraged as a continuing reflection of the strong timber and fierce spirit of the Rappahannock heritage.

Rappahannock County is blessed with many volunteers serving in various capacities. At the April 2 Rappahannock Board of Supervisors meeting the board unanimously passed a resolution promoted by Rappahannock County Public School Volunteer Coordinator Jan Makela that would appeal to the State Legislature to designate Rappahannock County as the Volunteer Capital of Virginia.

This upcoming Saturday, April 21 the Rappahannock Recreational Facilities Authority will sponsor the 23rd annual Fodderstack Classic Race. The race is the combination effort of many county residents and especially that of Jean Lillard and John McCarthy. The main sponsor of the race, The Inn is always gracious in going beyond the call of duty to sponsor events such as this one.

Volunteers from many organizations within Rappahannock work countless hours to encourage strong community efforts. School officials, churches, civic organizations, fire departments, rescue squads, as well as the Retired Senior Citizen group donate untold hours.

We encourage you to thank a volunteer today, this week or this month for their efforts and most of all we applaud each of you for a job well done, even though many organizations and individuals were not listed in this column. A special thanks to each and everyone!
