While people may not be able to choose whether they are physically flexible, or to feel they are in control of their situation, they can choose exercise, both mental and physical. These and other recent research studies, that support choosing both mental and physical challenges to keep the brain and body in good working order.

What’s the best way to get started? Would-be students can first make a list of at least five things they have always wanted to learn or do — once they had the time.

Such a list might include learning Spanish; learning to make sushi; or learning about astronomy, wildflowers and dog breeding.
