The seventh batter for Strasburg then cleared the bases with a double to the gap in left center field. When Strasburg scored on a passed ball three pitches later, to tie the game, it looked like the Rapp side might fold. But the defense held together and stopped the Rams cold the rest of the way.
In the seventh, junior Gwen Johnson singled to left, stole second and third, then scored on a squeeze bunt, perfectly executed by Sharp. When the dust cleared Rapp was ahead 5-4. The Lady Panthers defense held in the seventh and the girls left Strasburg with their 5-4 victory. After the game, Coach Smythe said, “I was glad we won. We clearly played better then the Strasburg girls for all but five batters in the fourth inning. Getting tied on the road and coming back to win* is the mark of a good team.
Tonight the Panthers were a really good team.” The Varsity girls are now 4 and 1 overall and 1-1 in the Bull Run District.
The JV Lady Panthers also faced Luray on MAday and Strasburg’s JV on Tuesday. On Monday, after jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning, the young pitching stgff ran out of gas.
Freshman, Lara Kreyling and Molly Burke combined for 21 walks in a hot, humid contest that couldn’t find the girls throwing strikes. After #the impressive start, it was a disappointing seventh inning loss to the JV from Luray 10-9.
On Tuesday, the JV Rams from Strasburg came to town and the Lady Panthers had recovered from Monday’s disappointing loss. Behind another strong outing by Kreyling, the girls sent the lady Rams home on the bottom end of a 12-3 loss. Kreyling allowed only two hits over six innings and struck out nine.
