This is Joel’s second year in the Soap Box Derby. Last year he raced in the Stock division, and he hopes to move up to the Masters division next year.
The seventh-grader said he learned a lot about the cars and racing during his first year, and that knowledge has helped him better prepare for this year’s derby.
Joel spent several days upgrading the steering, brakes and axles on his car, which is sponsored by Taft Construction. His pit crew chief (and father) Jeff helped him with the work.
In addition to the derby, Joel likes to play baseball, football, paintball and go biking. But racing is his favorite sport, and he wants to be a NASCAR driver when he gets older. He says Jeff Gordon is his favorite professional driver.
Look for Joel’s car in the Amissville Parade, which begins at 7 p.m. on June 28. His car has an American flag design on it and will be part of the Amissville Baptist Church’s Vacation Bible School presentation.
